Giving oilseed rape (OSR) an extra nutritional boost should be top of mind for growers. With a challenging few years behind us, optimising plant health now will be key to maximising final yield and profitability.
Importantly, once OSR begins flowering, it stops taking up nitrogen from the soil. This season’s dry conditions may have left nitrogen unused in the root zone, reducing availability to the plant. Foliar nitrogen applications offer a targeted solution, delivering nutrients directly to the foliage when the crop needs them most.
Nitrogen is essential to maintain canopy health and support pod and stem greenness, critical factors for yield. After flowering, foliar feeding is the only way to keep the crop photosynthesising effectively, helping to fill what could be a high number of seeds set during recent sunny conditions.
For best results, apply foliar nitrogen at the end of flowering (90–95% petal fall) using standard nozzles to thoroughly coat the pods, stems, and upper leaves.
