Topical crop nutrition advice to boost plant health and improve crop yield
As we start to think about autumn cropping, the importance of maintaining PK levels and addressing deficiencies in combinable crops is increasing. Recent wet autumn conditions have highlighted the need to get on early and ensure crops are supplied with sufficient levels of P&K. Available phosphate is important for rooting and establishment and potash is needed to balance other nutrients, especially nitrogen, to make sure they are taken-up and used by plants efficiently. A negative nutrient balance in maintenance or deficient situations leads to depleted indices and the risk of an uphill battle trying to restore levels. Recently highlighted data by the PDA shows a potentially high number of fields are not receiving sufficient P&K, resulting in declining indices. The most cost-effective approach is to regularly maintain indices and allow the run-down of high indices. If you haven’t applied P&K for some time, get fields tested and check. Sampling will allow growers to determine exactly how much P&K is needed, without over or under applying, allowing for tailor made rates to be applied.
