SMN Plus Soil Testing
Understanding your soil nitrogen profile is a crucial part of farming efficiently. Due to the unprecedented rainfall farmers across the UK have faced over the past year, it’s important to get an accurate picture ahead of the Spring 2025 season.
Utilising SMN Plus testing helps farmers understand two types of nitrogen within the soil:
1) “N Now” – Soil Mineral Nitrogen (SMN) which is directly available at the time of sampling for crop uptake but also prone to leaching.
2) “N Later” – N which will become available through mineralisation of organic matter and taken up by the crop between time of sampling and harvest. The latter is important for soils with high organic matter, after organic manure inputs, or after grass or vegetables and can contribute to considerable fertiliser savings

Looking at the pictured trials, there’s a broad variation of available nitrogen. Had both growers followed RB209 advice without conducting soil sampling, they would be growing at sub-optimal rates, an expensive mistake to make in the current market.
