Raspberry Fertiliser and Crop Nutrition

Raspberries are an important soft fruit crop grown within the UK, with two main types grown: Floricanes for summer fruiting and Primocanes for autumn fruiting. The OMEX horticulture team have been working with raspberry growers for decades and have a wealth of knowledge and experience in tailoring the most effective raspberry fertiliser and crop nutrition programmes.

New Root Development and Raspberry Crop Establishment

Crop establishment and strong root development will aid crop health, quality, yield and resilience to stress. Utilising a raspberry fertiliser programme will help the crop get off to the best start. Floricane and Primocane raspberry crops will benefit from a combined dose of Kelpak and O-Phyte to aid establishment.

Kelpak for Raspberries

Kelpak contains polyamines and phlorotannin’s that encourage fresh root development which replaces the blackened and damaged roots, particularly seen in raspberries, caused by excessive chilling in the cold store.

Kelpak will also alleviate the abiotic stress caused by high electrical conductivity which has potentially carried over from the propagation phase of growth.

O-Phyte for Blueberries

O-Phyte is a liquid phosphite fertiliser. Used at low rates on young plants, phosphites can act as biostimulants, promoting early root growth and plant establishment.

Phosphites are also highly systemic, capable of moving within the xylem and phloem. Consequently the plant can benefit from improved movement within the plant of partner cations such as Ca, Mg or Mn.

NPK Raspberry Fertiliser

Raspberries require a healthy dose of NPKS fertiliser to promote healthy growth. Nitrogen in raspberries is responsible for growth. Phosphorus aids root development and potassium aids water regulation and supports fruit development.

Raspberry growers can utilise the O-Mix Soluble Powder NPK range, grade 18-18-18+TE for a balanced ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, along with trace elements, vital for the establishment stage of growth. The balanced dose of NPK for raspberries will supply the crop with key macro and micro nutrients for healthy establishment and growth.

The liquid fertiliser nutrition is instantly available to raspberry crops, promoting early development and rooting.

Aiding Raspberry New Leaf Development

During the early stages of raspberry plant development, the crop requires an array of plant critical nutrients. Bio 18 is a biostiumlant based liquid foliar feed containing nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, iron, manganese, copper, zinc, boron and molybdenum.

Bio 18 provides the benefits of naturally occurring kelp and a balanced combination of macro and micro nutrients. The biostimulants and nutrients found in Bio 18 improve root growth and nutrient uptake to a greater level than when the two are applied separately.

Raspberry canes can develop rots and botrytis in cold storage so it’s important to ensure copper (Cu) levels are optimised to allow the effective lignification of tissues, particularly the rind. However, excess copper can encourage senescence, so assessment of Cu levels and the correct timing of applications is paramount before canes are stored. Utilising SAP analysis and Bio 18 can help provide the raspberry crop with correct levels of copper nutrition.

Raspberry Blossom, Colour Change and Harvest Growth Periods

These are crucial development stages and require a healthy dose of calcium in combination with Kelpak. Kelpak and CalMax Ultra which is OMEX’s ultimate calcium nutrition, work hand in hand to produce excellent quality fruit.

When we use Kelpak with CalMax Ultra as a regularly applied foliar spray we find pollination is better giving us consistent fruit shape, better fruit quality and improved yield in class 1 fruit.

Kelpak For Raspberries

Kelpak is a kelp concentrate which is manufactured using a unique cell-burst process without heat, chemical digestion or dehydration. This patented process ensures maximum retention of the delicate growth promoting substances found in this species of kelp. Kelpak also contains a wide range of nutrients, vitamins and amino acids.

The combination of natural active compounds impact upon plants in different ways according to the plant growth stage and condition. Kelpak works to increase plant tolerance to stress and improves pollen germination, pollen tube growth, fertilisation and fruit growth.

Increased Raspberry Firmness

The increased raspberry leaf and fruit calcium allows for longer storage life and less risk of physical damage as well as a greater resilience to physiological breakdown.

Trials have demonstrated that the calcium available within the CalMax range increases raspberry fruit firmness by 78%+
