Farmer and contractor Tom Short of S K Agri Partnership, Kilmullen House, North West Wicklow made the switch to using OMEX liquid nitrogen and sulphur fertiliser ranges on his arable and grassland farming enterprise five years ago.

The home farm based at Kilmullen House comprises:

- A herd of 150 milking Friesian cows averaging 7500L/cow
On the tillage side of the business, the free draining sandy loam soils support a rotation which this year comprises of :

- 13ha winter wheat
- 150ha spring barley
- 65ha spring beans
- 32ha winter oats
- 60ha permanent pasture
“We couldn’t be happier now with our liquid nitrogen fertiliser regime. It has revolutionised our whole approach to nutrient application ”

Tom’s Switch To Using Liquid Fertilisers with OMEX Ireland
Flexibility, environmental benefits and application accuracy are the key drivers for a significant number of Irish farmers switching from traditional granular fertiliser systems to high performance liquid fertiliser solutions.
When considering his switch to liquid Tom commented “Any wind during granular application and our accuracy levels plummeted.” “We also had issues with granular pellet uniformity and consistency. We were using 10:10:20 but couldn’t get the CCF (Complete Compound Fertiliser), and blends weren’t working for us either. Quinns at the time were promoting liquid fertiliser solutions and so we gave it a go. That was five years ago and the rest is history as they say.”
Switching to liquid nitrogen fertiliser for Mr Short coincided with the decision on the farm to replace a 12 year old self propelled Bateman 30m machine. The new machine has auto section control which negates overlapping. The 40t and a 65t OMEX liquid fertiliser storage tanks were supplied and installed by OMEX, while the cost of regulation standard bunding was covered by Mr Short.
“We started on our liquid nitrogen journey using OMEX Nitroflo fertiliser,” explains Mr Short. “The company is now offering more options including the Multiflo NPKS liquid fertiliser range, based on NP’s, NK’s and NPK’s, which are all available with sulphur for enhanced efficiency.
“Product quality is obviously a key driver for us, but so too are the many added benefits that liquid fertilisers offer,” he explains.
“We can also apply liquid fertiliser whenever we want, including in windy and wet conditions. This makes liquid fertiliser application timing so much more flexible and therefore has a positive impact on labour and machinery utilisation.”

“Application accuracy is so important, not only from a cost perspective but also from an environmental situation. We no longer have nutrients being thrown into the hedgerows and there is no waste package disposal requirement.”
